Anatomy Projects is a collaboration between artists David Penny & Gavin Parry. We use an old Victorian camera that re-invigorates the magic and wonder of taking photographs and making portraits.

This is not a romantic return to an analogue process; it instead functions to interrupt the usual response of a person in front of the camera. When portraiture today is so fleeting and prevalent in social media, the work functions to slow down and more carefully “take stock” of the 21st century individual

Using this camera – which is more like a piece of furniture – takes time, producing a single and unique image of a person. Sharing much with painted portraits, the act of photographing becomes a meeting between the subject and the camera. There are rules but no formulaic way of working can be applied, each situation is unique, as is each individual and each moment.

We work with individuals, groups and organisations; making photographs that are a celebration of identity. Each presents a “face” or appearance to the camera, a condensation of all that is happening on the inside, making connections between the appearance of a subject and the possible narratives beyond the surface.
